From pre-colonization to 1776, the Spanish, British, and French empires colonized North America flourishing under their own sovereignty. Each territory had different forms of government, placed a different emphasis on religion in society, and independently fostered relations with the Native American communities.
Time Line (precolonization-1776)
1492- Queen Isabella of Spain agreed to fund the expedition of Christopher Columbus to Spain
1512- Encomienda system is created.
1517-Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses.
1520- Bartolome de Las Casas AKA the "Protector of the Indians" recognized the Indians as humans and argued that the conversion to Christianity had to be done peacefully
1542- The New Laws of 1542 were designed to protect Native Americans and to restrain encomenderos.
1550-The government awarded ecomiendas to conquerors who used their Native Americans as a source of labor.
1570-Regime of conquistadors were under the rule of the Spanish crown.
1604- Explorer Samuel de Champlain landed in the new world (French)
1607- The English Explorers established the first lasting settlement in North America, Jamestown
1608- Quebec was founded by Samuel de Champlain. (French)
1609- Samuel de Champlain began forging alliances with Native American tribes for exchange of furs and European goods. (French)
1620- The ecomiendas disappeared which resulted in colonists looking for grants of land.
1627- The French government set up the Seigneurial system in New France; a form of land settlement modeled around the French Feudal system. (French)
1639- Marie de I’lncarnation founded the first Ursuline Convent. Nuns from the convents helped set to up the model for French society for its settlers. (French)
1649- The Act Concerning Religion was enacted
1661- French Royal Government takes direct control of New France from the charter corporation and sends 1000 soldiers to New Canada. (French)
1680- Taos Pueblo named Pope helped lead the Pueblo Indians into rebellion against the Spanish which is also known as the Revolt of the Pueblo Indians.
1685- The Edict of Nantes extended religious tolerance in New Canada to French Protestants (many had left for America in search of religious freedom). (French)
1700- There were 19,000 settlers in New Canada, far more than the English had sent. As a result, the French government sent fewer emigrants out of fear that they would become less of a superpower in Europe. (French)
1756-1763- The Seven Year War. The British fought against both the French and Indians.
1763- Britain gained control of New France and allowed some of the seigneurial system to remain in place as a favor to the French settlers. (French)
